what is a wand?
#1
in watching a video today about magic wands, I encountered an image of a lovely 24,000 year old ivory spurtle.

the wand is not phallic. the wand is a distaff, or, I was pleased to see today, a spurtle.

Wikipedia says the spurtle (a wooden stick for stirring porridge) hearkens back to the fifteenth century, but archeologists beg to differ. the implement known as "spurtle" is at least 3,000 years old, and it would be ridiculous to think it's not much, much older... as in, as old as cooking itself.

repetitive work can induce a trance-like state, and the tools used become associated with power not just because of their use in survival, but because of the feelings people get when they use them, which is why the tools of magic are everyday items.
